We Took The MOST Scenic Steam Train Ride In America

If you ever wanted to go back in time you can do it! The southwestern part of Colorado is full of adventures that are bucket list worthy. And the most scenic steam train ride happens to be in Durango, Colorado The Durango Silverton Steam Train. This train is over 100+ years!

Durango is known for many things — massive mountains, unbeatable skiing and a historic narrow gauge railroad to name a few. But there's so much more to this former mining town.

My friend DownieLive (Mike Downie) thought it was a great idea to help me cross some items off my bucket list and I was down for it!

The Durango Silverton train takes you through the mountains of the San Juan National forest, the flowing Animas River sparkles as the sun’s glare hits it, and the crispy air that fills the outdoor open car is a feeling like no other. For a train enthusiast like me I couldn’t stop smiling. I think I smiled for the entire duration of the trip.

If you are planning at trip to Durango, Colorado here’s a few things that I would recommend:

  • Pay the extra fee and ride in First Class it’s worth it. You also have access to the open air car.

  • Book a hotel that’s within walking distance of the train. We stayed next door in a hotel and it was easier to walk form the hotel to the station.

  • Buy your tickets in advance. The weekends are the busiest and Mike and I decided to take our trip on a Saturday.

  • You can bring your own lunch onboard or buy snacks from the concession car. The snacks are reasonable priced, and I’d suggest you to buy the snacks before you sit down in your assigned car.

  • When riding in First Class some of the drinks are free (coffee, tea, water) and you can also pay for alcoholic beverages as well.

  • Bring a light jacket or sweater in case it’s chilly or raining.
