How To Survive Traveling Around The World As A Vegan

There are many types of eaters around the world and while many people survive on meat and potatoes, there are quite a few of us that love our veggies and strive to eat as many clean foods as possible.

Now, I do not have anything against those who eat meat, because I was one not long ago, but as a vegan, those foods are not for me anymore. Going vegan has helped me maintain an ideal weight, I've had more energy than in the past and I feel AMAZING! (In Oprah's voice.)

For the longest time, I thought that I would have difficulty traveling around the world and seeing new destinations, because of the foods that I choose to eat. However, over past two years, I have discovered that many cities and countries have so many vegan options.

Root Down in Denver, Colorado has great vegan options. This was a delicious and hearty vegan burrito with red and purple potatoes.

Now, don’t let me lead you to think that I just happened to stumble upon these restaurants when I arrived at my destination and that you will too! No, if you plan on eating as a vegan while traveling the world, you will need to do your research first.

I recommend beginning to look for vegan restaurants, and other vegan options, well before you choose your next vacation destination. While many foreign countries are embracing vegan eating, some of the more isolated areas and smaller countries may not have as many options as you would like.

As soon as you know that the area you want to visit has enough vegan options for you, you can book your flight and accommodations and have an amazing time! Of course, I know that you may not want to skip over those smaller countries, or isolated areas, just because they do not have as many vegan restaurants, but be prepared if theres not a vegan restaurant in a small town. I’ve been on a few destinations around the world that were smaller and I had to cook my food at my Airbnb.

The best way to find great vegan restaurants is to use the Yelp App or Happy Cow. In this photo, I found a great vegan breakfast restaurant in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In these scenarios, I simply make sure that I stay near one of the local grocery stores, so I have the opportunity to pick up plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables every day or two. You may not think that this is as easy as eating out but trust me when I say that you will not notice much of a difference when you are ready to eat a meal.

While I have found many fantastic vegan restaurants around the world, my absolute favorites have been in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Madrid, Spain, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

  • BioOrganics - Playa del Carmen, Mexico

  • Viva Burger - Madrid, Spain

  • LuvBurger - San Jose, Costa Rica

Also, I was surprised by the vegan options here in the United States especially in Denver, Colorado. My favorite vegan restaurant has to be Watercourse in Denver. At times, I daydream about their Jackfruit Nachos with Cashew Cheese. You can watch me chow down in the Denver Food Guide video below.

You can find many Vegan options by downloading the following apps or going to their websites before you plan your trip.
